Mendelssohn Stipendium recipients

This competition for music students was first awarded in 1879 and ended in 1934. The idea was to award two prizes of 1500 Marks each year: one to a “producing” artist (composer); and one to a “reproducing” artist (performer). However, from the beginning there were variations in how the prizes were distributed. There were almost always more than two recipients, and in the first decades there were also honorable mentions (marked “E.E.” or “L.E.”) and a few times travel money was given out.
It was open to all students at a state-subsidized music training institute in Germany without distinction of age, sex, religion, and nationality. In its first decades the winners were overwhelmingly from the Berlin Hochschule and even more predictably violin students of Joachim.

The current incarnation of the award, since 2013, is the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Conservatory Competition. This official website includes a list of winners from the original award. The other main source for the following list is Rudolf Elvers, “Aus der Geschichte: der Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Stiftung in Berlin,” Mendelssohn Studien (Duncker & Humblot., 2003): 345-370. According to Elvers, there are no official records for the years 1907-1911, and there were no awards from 1921-1924 due to devaluation of currency. There was an announcement of the recipients for 1921 in Die Musik, however.
There was another Mendelssohn Scholarship conferred in Britain that is often confused with the German one.

My list includes information from news announcements in music journals. In the far column, “BP” indicates Berlin Philharmonic, the date being the first appearance; and “H” standing for being a member of the Berlin Hochschule’s faculty, “J” = Joachim student.
