Today isTuesday. Mendelssohn’s Paulus at the cavernous Zoo Ausstellungshalle is a fund raiser for the widows and orphans from the shipwreck of the Berlin steamer last month. 300 musicians will be taking part, with the main solos sung by Emilie Herzog and Alexander Heinemann.
Holy Week concerts begin with the St John Passion; soloists are Clara Erler, Felix Senius, Johannes Messchaert, and Felix Lederer Prina.
A “popular Beethoven Abend” is presenting the rarely-performed Scottish Lieder for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass with piano trio accompaniment. The singers–Klara Erler, Gertrud Fischer-Maretzki, Leo Gollanin, and Anton Sistermanns–are accompanied by the Holländische Trio (J. van Veen, Jacques van Lier, and Coenraad Bos). The other work is the Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, no. 1 (“the Ghost”).
Hilde la Harpe’s lieder and recitation evening with Dr. Potpeschnigg at the piano includes works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Franz, Graedener, Wolf, Strauss, Streicher, and Weingartner.
The third concert by Hungarian violinist Alexander Sebald (1869-1934) is comprised of a single work, Paganini’s Op. 1. It is billed as the first time all 24 Caprices for solo violin are performed in concert. (When he gave this concert three years later in New York, critics were not amused, and asked why anyone would want to listen to this in one sitting, which seems to me an excellent point.)
The Argentinian pianist Hugo Del Carril, whose Berlin Philharmonic debut was on 21.11.1904, will be performing Bach-Busoni, Prelude and Fugue in D major; Beethoven, op 57; Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes, Liszt’s B minor Sonata, and Liszt’s Rhapsodie Espagnole.
The Philharmonic’s popular concert features principal cellist Joseph Malkin; price is 75 pfennigs for an 8 pm concert.
The opera tonight is Pique Dame, Lustige Witwe continues at Theater des Westens, and at the Central-Theater, Zigeunerbaron.
