Joachim students in the Philadelphia Orchestra

1900-1906

All of these violinists played in the first years of the orchestra, whose first season was in 1900. None stayed long.

Carl Döll/Doell (25.12.1869-1939) had been concertmaster at Montreux, Switzerland, before coming to the US. He does not seem to have pursued a career in an orchestra.

Edward A. Stringer (18.9.1872-after 1946) was born in Philadelphia and was still teaching there in 1920.

Benno Schuch had been concertmaster in Graz before coming to the US. By 1908 he was back in Berlin, teaching and playing chamber music.

John Marquardt (16.10.1859-after 1936) as considerably older than these other former students, and had experience playing in Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, and New York. He had spent 1894-1902 in San Francisco, and returned to California for the last decades of his long career.

During Hugo Olk’s (23.3.1870-30.7.1934) time with the orchestra, his older brother Gustav played in the viola section.

Eduard Tak (30.10.1881-28.12.1943) had first played in the Chicago Symphony, and after his year in the Philadelphia Orchestra, went on to be concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1908-09, and of the San Francisco Symphony in 1911-12.
