The Joachim Quartet’s concerts outside of Berlin

The “London” Joachim Quartet  1859-1897

Before the Berlin Quartet was formed, Joachim played regularly on the London Popular Concerts from 1859 onwards. These were not pure Quartet concerts, but included other forms of chamber music and singers between the main works. His most constant collaborator was the cellist Alfredo Piatti (1822-1901). Ludwig Straus (1830-1897) was usually the violist. Second violinist was Louis Ries (1830-1913). Straus retired in 1893; Ries and Piatti retired in 1897. Thereafter the Berlin quartet traveled with Joachim to London. In their last decade they actually played more concerts in Britain than in Berlin.

The Beethoven-Haus Bonn Chamber Music Festivals

The chamber music festivals at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn began in May of 1890. The Joachim Quartet was a mainstay of these for the subsequent festivals in 1893, 1897, 1900, 1903, 1905 and 1907.

Other places in Germany

Leipzig was the most frequent destination in the 1880s. In the 1890s they played on the venerable Frankfurt Museum Concert series four times. They added southern German cities last.

Further Afield

Starting in 1890, Vienna became an almost yearly destination. Trips to Italy, Switzerland, and Paris were added on to their schedule…but not to America. (They were invited to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 but Joachim was too busy.)
